Fitness Startup Lets Trainers Work From Home

The team at Moxie had big plans for 2020. It was going to be the year that the on-demand fitness platform broke into the technology categories of blockchain and micro-transactions. Then February and COVID-19 happened, and self-described serial entrepreneur Jason Goldberg went into crisis mode. It wasn’t a new business model pivot he was after – it was complete reinvention.

“It became clear in February that the business we wanted to launch was not going to launch this year,” Goldberg told PYMNTS. “And so we decided we could either just wait it out and see what happened over the next 18 to 24 months, or we could build something that people need right now. And it took about a week for us to agree that we were just going to pivot the entire business and go all in on building something the people needed right now. We asked ourselves what we were going to miss the most during the pandemic. We saw there was an opportunity in fitness, because people were working out at home and couldn’t take classes with their favorite instructor. We saw an opportunity both from the instructor standpoint and from the fitness fanatic standpoint.”

Moxie launches today (Tuesday) after spending the summer and fall in beta. Goldberg likes to call it the Airbnb of fitness. More formally, it is a hybrid fitness site for instructors to reach clients, both new and existing. And it’s a site where fitness enthusiasts can find subscriptions for monthly or weekly live classes, all streamed directly on its platform. Subscribers also get access to the video recordings, which can be streamed on Moxie’s site, as well as music clearances, playlists and CRM functionality for the instructors to manage their clients. During the beta phase, Goldberg says there were more than 6,500 classes available, and more than 10,000 individual sessions were live-streamed. The site has also signed up more than 2,000 instructors.

At its core, Moxie has provided independent instructors with a place to set up shop, regardless of whether they were previously teaching at Equinox, Planet Fitness or Yoga Works. The platform has essentially enabled fitness instructors to become entrepreneurs, and Goldberg says it has shifted the economic model. Pre-pandemic, a fitness instructor would show up at a studio and – depending on where in the U.S. she was living – would make between $25 and $75 per class at most, with the balance of the fee going to the studio or gym. In the Moxie model, the instructor keeps 85 percent of the revenue.

Two Virtual Trainers Share The Most Common Home Fitness Mistakes

The at-home fitness industry has had an explosive year. Dumbells are sold out at major retailers, fitness streaming apps are reporting record memberships, and luxe gyms are sailing on troubled waters. All signs indicate that yoga mats on living room floors could be a mainstay for a new wave of fitness enthusiasts finding their groove during the pandemic.

Taking the matter of personal fitness into your own hands is certainly more cost effective—and these days, poses a lower risk of COVID-19 exposure than venturing into your gym. But if you’ve recently had your first foray into home fitness, there’s also a bit of a learning curve. Certain mistakes can inhibit or prolong results, cause muscle strain, or even lead to injury. So ahead, two group fitness instructors from Obé Fitness—Walter Kemp and Alex Scolari—share the most common at-home fitness mistakes they see among trainees.

Failure to Devise a Consistent (and Varied) Workout Schedule

Both trainers agree that consistency is key. In order to optimize results, you should devise a workout schedule that features a variety of workout types and targeted muscle groups—then stick to it. “Don’t let your body get too comfortable; challenge yourself and mix things up,” says Scolari. “Varying workouts will help you target your full body.” If you’re on a five workouts per week schedule, Kemp recommends scheduling in three full body classes, plus two classes that target specific muscle groups. For example, you might complete a 30 minute HIIT class three days a week, then a targeted arms class one day and a targeted abs class another day.

Skipping Rest Days

Recovery is an often overlooked part of a balanced fitness routine. “Recovery is a key aspect of training. I’d say it’s the key aspect of training,” says Kemp. “You aren’t gaining muscle or losing fat in the gym or after all your grueling at home workouts. It [happens during] your recovery process. Proper sleep and adequate protein, water, mineral, and vitamin intake are vital for not only changing one’s physique but keeping your body strong and resilient.” Scolari echoes this sentiment, but notes that a rest day doesn’t mean spending the day on the couch. Scolari works out five days a week, then uses the remaining two days to take a restorative yoga class or long walk as her recovery days.

Disregarding Nutrition

While it can be tempting to indulge after a tough workout, Kemp underscores the importance of fueling your body properly in conjunction with your fitness routine. “Movement and effort is great, but follow that up with general lethargy and a poor diet after every workout and you have a recipe for not achieving your goals,” he says.

But these are not the only Vision Fitness Elliptical Trainers. There are two other models which have had better reviews. Vision Fitness Elliptical Trainers x6100 and x6200 HRT have ironed out some of the problems in the earlier models.

Both the x6100 and the x6200 have a 20 inch stride length. The reviews picked up on this improved feature.

Health Magazine gave the Vision Fitness Elliptical Trainer x6100 a particularly good review.

In addition the x6200 has extra features that make it particularly good buy. There is a three year warranty on parts and a lifetime brakes warranty from Vision Fitness Elliptical Trainers on the x6200. With this model you can also program your own fitness routine on the machine. You can even change the footpads on the x6200.

The LA Times, Consumers Digest and Smart Money Magazine all gave these models good reviews. There was a lot of positive feed back. There was a little criticism of the LCD on the x6100 but its performance was praised.

A model which was missed out by many reviewers was the Vision Fitness Elliptical Trainer x6600 HRT. It is professional standard machine such as you would find in a gym or fitness center but you can also buy it for home use. This is why the reviews tend to overlook it. They regard it as a strictly professional elliptical trainer.
