Kelleen Tait follows along with a virtual spin class at UNITE YQL during Alberta’s second wave of COVID-19.

Kelleen Tait relies on her weekly workout sessions to keep grounded and manage her stress.

“During the first lockdown, I didn’t know what to do.”

With new Alberta gym capacity restrictions in place, she’s found a way to keep moving: a rent-a-bike program and virtual spin classes from local studio UNITE YQL.

“It’s way harder than I would work out on my own and it really keeps me going,” Tait said.

For her, it’s not just about getting a sweat in. She says it allows her to still feel connected with instructors and a community she loves.

“As we’re all kind of shutting our doors and going into a bit more of an isolation mode, being able to generate that community is such a wonderful thing to be a part of and to support,” Tait said. “Especially when it’s [a local business] and it’s right in our downtown core.”

Owner of UNITE YQL, Vanessa Bishop, said it’s been a lifeline for her business and the supportive community they’ve worked to build over the last few years.

“The virtual program has allowed us to keep moving even though our physical space is temporarily closed.”

Although the decision to rent out expensive equipment was difficult, Bishop says it’s brought the studio’s high-energy barre and spin classes directly into clients’ homes.

“[We can keep] giving hollers and encouraging the riders, because that’s the whole experience with us… It’s a fun atmosphere.”

The Lethbridge YMCA will also be offering virtual classes for members starting next week.

“There’s going to be fitness classes, yoga classes, wellness classes and all sorts of other items that will serve our community the best possible,” YMCA of Lethbridge Interim General Manager Scott Boyd said.

“We realize that everyone is dealing with this in all different ways.”

Boyd said a new gym space is now open on the facility’s main floor for those looking to move around safely.

Tait says she plans to continue riding out the pandemic while supporting local business.

“I’m actually moving and I keep motivated,” she said. “It’s been great from a mental health aspect.”

She encourages others who might be interested in upping their at-home workouts to give it a spin.

Out & About: FWRD Fitness Studio

If you’re craving community, but want to stay safe while you sweat… this story is for you.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — If you’re craving community, but want to stay safe while you sweat… this story is for you.

We’re all just trying to exhale and get through things these days. And Stephanie Firenze wants to help. She owns FWRD Fitness Studio in San Diego.

Stephanie says, “Fitness has always been my outlet ever since I was little. I wanted to share that with people. Fitness is my time to connect with myself and forget everything else that’s happening in the world.”

I mean, it’s hard to forget what’s going on around us, especially when you’re a small business owner like Stephanie. Because of the pandemic, she had to reduce her class capacity and therefore wasn’t able to afford her studio rent in Rancho Bernardo anymore. So after 9 years, she moved forward so she wouldn’t get left behind. Stephanie took her studio outside, to a spot of land in Poway.

“Our first classes were out there by the dumpsters. But I just remember that first day, almost everyone was in tears because they were just craving community. As I like to say, we are physically distancing but socially connecting.”

Stephanie and her husband connected with the Poway community and started renting land from a privately owned park, taking advantage of unused soccer turf to build their new 24-hundred square foot fitness studio.

“We quickly put the cement blocks on top and put wood planks up. My husband painted it. We brought the bars from the studio. I learned all about frame tents and pole tents.”

Surrounded by hay bales to block out the noise and a canopy to shield you from the weather, there’s plenty of room to distance your yoga mats but stay close to your fitness community. And for Stephanie, the Poway community holds a special place in her heart.

“We live here. My kids go to school right there. So I feel very ingrained in this community. And I love supporting all the small businesses, too. It’s been quite a journey. Lots of ups and downs and learning. But I am very hopeful and I’m positive. We’re going through this but we’ll all become stronger versions of ourselves. That’s what I tell myself.”

And as Stephanie ends each class saying… “Slowly lower your hand on your heart. My hope is that by taking this time for yourself today, you’re able to navigate this new day with more confidence and more ease. Thank you guys for joining me today”.

New fitness boutique studio ‘Yes Honey’ opens off Tower Grove Ave.

A brand new boutique fitness studio offering dance fitness and strength training classes offers in person and on-demand classes.

If this feels like a really cool music video that you want to be a part of, that is exactly what Jenny Hill is going for with her newest passion project – Yes Honey.

“It’s really just a space to come and move and get out,” said Hill.

Professional in Chicago and LA, Hill wanted to bring an inclusive dance fitness studio to St. Louis. She signed a lease for 25 thousand square foot space on Tower Grove.

And then the pandemic hit. She’s choosing to see the bright side in that business wise.

Yes Honey is all about access and acceptance, restoring the mental, physical and social balance that’s been hard for a lot of us to maintain during a pandemic.

“Everybody should be moving their body in some way, shape or form. And so we wanted to create a space where, like everybody felt welcome and everyone felt that like like the goal is just to get together and move in some move and be positive and not necessarily to have any other goals in your workout,” said Hill.

Yes Honey Studio is now open in the Woodward Lofts building at 1519 Tower Grove Avenue in the city.
They’re doing masked in-person classes, as well as online on-demand and outdoor classes.

London spin studio owner worries new safety measures will sink group fitness

With new measures in place to curb the spread of COVID-19 for fitness studios, restaurants and personal care providers, one local fitness facility is questioning whether they can survive another financial hit sprung by the ongoing pandemic.

Courtney Grafton opened Lost Cycle, a rhythm-riding, indoor cycling studio in south London, just a little more than a year ago.

Since being allowed to reopen back in July, the studio has been able to offer classes at pre-pandemic capacity while keeping riders and staff two metres apart, but Grafton doesn’t think she’ll be able to keep afloat with the new cap of 10 people, including the instructor, per class.

“Our classes are built off of an environment of a group fitness class and by limiting that so much, it makes us almost impossible to operate,” she said.

“No one needs to be a mathematician to figure out that the numbers they’re giving us with the amount that it costs me to operate a business do not add up. I cannot survive off of nine people in a class, while still paying [instructors] their regular rate.”

In the last few months, the studio has been able to weather the storm thanks to constant support from dedicated cyclists in the city who have been keeping the studio’s 21 weekly classes fairly busy, despite an outbreak at Spinco, a cycling studio in Hamilton that has made headlines across the country for being linked to 81 COVID-19 cases.

“I don’t get to decide how scared someone is,” Grafton said. “I really feel for Spinco … but it’s a full time job to make sure that everything is cleaned properly … You have to really be diligent and treat it very, very seriously every single day. You don’t get a break from it,” she said, adding that her biggest expenses are cleaning supplies, including a steam cleaner staff use on bikes in between each class.

Keeping bikes two metres apart from one another, steam cleaning them in between rides, having staff wear microphones to reduce the need to shout in class as well as checking every rider’s temperature ahead of class are some of the guidelines the fitness studios has already been following. Now, they’ll have to bring capacity down to 10 and space bikes by three metres, along with the other measures already taken. (Submitted by Courtney Grafton)

On Wednesday, Dr. Chris Mackie, the region’s medical officer of health, cited the outbreak in the Hamilton cycling studio as an example of why he’s decided to implement the new measures, despite the absence any outbreaks linked to fitness facilities in the region.

“That’s the sort of thing where we’re not going to sit around and wait for a huge outbreak in our community before taking some reasonable actions that will potentially eliminate the possibility of having that level of outbreak at all,” he said.

“As much as we watch very closely what is happening in our community and learn from the cases and outbreaks we have here,

Former downtown London fitness studio to become city’s first ‘zero waste’ grocery store

London’s grocery scene will be a little greener in November with the opening of the city’s first and only “zero waste” grocery store in the city’s downtown.

The couple behind the store is Heenal Rajani and Kara Rijnen, who own Reimagine Co. the city’s first “waste-free” store. Their grocery venture, Reimagine Gorceries, will be located inside a building that once housed a former fitness studio located at 206 Piccadilly Street just off Richmond Row and will be based on a similar philosophy.

Rajani told CBC News Monday that the store will sell all of its goods in bulk.

“Rather than just grab a package of rice and throw it into your cart, you’ll actually be able to choose. ‘Will I need this whole kilo of rice or maybe I just need half a kilo?”

“You’re not going to be dictated to based on package size. You can grab as much or as little as you want.”

He said it means customers will have to remember to bring their own Tupperware, jam jars or reusable bags and if they forget, the store offers its own reusable containers on-site.

“You can bring containers from home or we’ll have containers there that you can pay a small deposit on.”

“You wash them and bring them back or we sanitize them with a commercial dishwasher, so that way the containers are going to be used 10 to 1,000 times.”

The store was made possible after Rajani and Rijnen launched a crowdsourcing campaign last month, quickly surpassing their $50,000 goal and increasing it to $75,000. In the end, the couple raised more than $88,000 thanks to the donations of more than 865 supporters.

Rajani said the 865 people who donated to the cause will be reimbursed once the store opens with the equivalent of their donation as pre-purchased groceries.

The exact date of the grand opening hasn’t been determined yet because there is still plenty of work to be done on-site to get the store ready, including renovations, permits and installing commercial appliances.

The only real hitch, Rajani said, is making sure everyone who contributed and anyone who’s curious doesn’t show up all at the same time.

“What we don’t want is for all 865 people to show up on opening day. That’s not something we would be able to handle, but we will be continuing to communicate through our social media channels to let people know how we’re going to be opening.”

“Maybe it will be a soft opening, where we’ll open for a couple of hours on the first day and gradually bring that up.” he said.

“It’s such a new concept.”

New fitness studio in Omaha offers strength, cardio workouts for all fitness levels | Live Well

Omaha’s newest fitness studio has something to offer for all fitness levels, its owners said.

The Sculpt Studio, which mixes Pilates-style workouts with treadmill workouts, opened in late August in Elkhorn.

Owners Sarah Marshall and Emily Burgat teamed up to bring the concept to Omaha. The metro area already is home to several cycling studios, Marshall said.

“We wanted to bring something new and different,” she said.

Classes at Sculpt are high- intensity and low-impact. They’re suitable for gymgoers of all fitness levels. Some clients have used the classes as complements to their existing fitness routines, Marshall said.

In one class, gymgoers use Megaformer machines, which are similar to traditional Pilates machines. Participants work a muscle group until those muscles are fatigued before moving onto another group.

In another class, participants spend half the time on the Megaformers and half the time on Woodway Curve treadmills. The treadmills, which are curved on the bottom, are nonmotorized, so users control the speed by running or walking on them.

Classes are limited to 11 participants in the 2,000-square-foot studio. Each class is 50 minutes.

Machines are spaced out in the studio, and they’re wiped off regularly. Gymgoers are required to wear masks until they reach their designated machine for class. Class times are spaced out to avoid clients overlapping as they come and go.

A Spinco Cycling Studio Is at the Center of a 72-Person Coronavirus Outbreak in Canada

Despite following COVID-19 protocols, indoor cycling classes at a Spinco fitness studio have triggered a coronavirus outbreak of at least 72 people in Ontario, Canada, public health officials say. As many as 100 staff, clients, and family members may have been exposed, CNN reported.

The Spinco studio had just reopened in Hamilton, Ontario, in July, and was adhering to coronavirus safety rules, said Elizabeth Richardson, MD, Hamilton’s medical officer of health, in a statement to CNN. These included screening staff and attendees, tracking attendees, masking before and after classes, laundering towels, and cleaning rooms within 30 minutes after the conclusion of a class. According to city officials, Spinco was also operating at half-capacity and maintained a six-foot radius of space around each bike.

“We took all the measures public health offered, even added a few, and still the pandemic struck us again,” the studio wrote on Instagram. The outbreak appears to be linked to classes held from Sept. 28 to Oct. 4, and Spinco Hamilton has been closed since the outbreak was identified. Of the confirmed positive cases associated with the studio, 47 are primary cases (45 patrons and two staff members) and 25 are secondary cases, indicating “household spread” to family, friends, or other contacts.

There has been concern about indoor workout classes potentially aiding coronavirus transmission, but this appears to be one of the largest related outbreaks yet. Officials are particularly concerned because the facility was closely following health protocols. “We continue to look at what does it mean, what do we need to understand about exercise classes,” Dr. Richardson said in a media briefing on Oct. 13, according to CNN.

Linsey Marr, PhD, an expert on airborne transmission and a professor of engineering at Virginia Tech, noted on Twitter that the protocol did not appear to require effective ventilation at the studio – an increasingly critical factor considering the potential for airborne spread of the virus. “Six feet is not enough,” she wrote. “The gym did health screening, cleaning, masks before and after class, 50% capacity, and 6′ around each bike. NOTHING ABOUT VENTILATION.”

According to Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), a public health spokesperson said that the size of the outbreak, in spite of adherence to protocol, “will likely contribute to a change in guidelines and practices moving forward.”
