Does Microban Work On COVID? EPA Signs Off On 24-Hour Bacteria-Shield Claims

The Environmental Protection Agency approved a spray that’s known to kill the virus that causes COVID-19 on contact, the developer said Thursday.

North America Home Care, an arm of Proctor & Gamble, said its Microban 24 Sanitizing Spray was found to kill SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the global pandemic.

Already available at most retail outlets, the spray is shown to kill 99.9% of the bacteria and viruses it comes into contact with, including the common cold and flu viruses. While it offers 24-hour protection against some common bacterial strains, the developers said it does not provide 24-hour residual protection against viruses.

Frank Esper, a doctor with the Cleveland Clinic and a company advisor, said that, without a vaccine, it’s important for people to sanitize.

“With delays in COVID-19 virus testing, having any infection may lead to significant disruptions at home, school, and work,” he said in a statement. “Therefore, over the coming cold and flu season, it will be especially important to ensure protection against viruses and bacteria that can cause infections.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Monday he felt confident a vaccine might be available yet this year, but it would only diminish the chances of showing COVID-19 symptoms, not offer a cure.

Health officials in the Northern Hemisphere are concerned the onset of colder weather will make people more susceptible to colds and flus, as well as SARS-CoV-2.

Akiki Iwasaki, a Yale immunologist, told health news agency STAT last week that colder air and less humidity means drier conditions that limit how mucus can protect against foreign invaders like the novel coronavirus, placing a premium on sanitization and disinfection.

The spray is not a drug and should not be ingested. Drugs in the U.S. are approved by the Food and Drug Administration, not the EPA.

North Carolina Gov. Cooper signs order preventing evictions

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper signed an executive order Wednesday preventing landlords from evicting tenants who are unable to pay their rent.

The order, which aims to clarify an existing residential eviction moratorium outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will remain in effect for the rest of the year.

“Many families are trying to do the right thing,” Cooper said in a news conference. “They’re having to make tough choices, but this virus has made it difficult.”

A report prepared for the National Council of State Housing Agencies estimated 300,000 to 410,000 households in the state are unable to pay rent and are at risk of eviction, and 240,000 eviction filings could be submitted by January 2021. Together, landlords face a rental shortfall ranging from $632 million to $824 million.

The order notes that the CDC moratorium applies to all eligible residents, regardless of whether they live on federally subsidized housing.

“The result during this global pandemic will be more North Carolinians staying in their homes, more landlords getting paid rent and fewer utility companies shutting off of power,” Cooper said.

The governor’s announcement comes at a time when the state is grappling with an uptick in coronavirus cases, which Cooper does not yet consider a “spike.”

The state partially reopened bars, amusement parks and movie theaters earlier this month while easing indoor and outdoor gathering restrictions. Large venues such as football stadiums also have been able to have more fans in attendance for games.

The so-called Phase 3 reopening plan ends Nov. 13, giving Cooper about two more weeks to decide whether to ease or tighten current restrictions.

“We don’t have plans to go back,” Cooper said.

In the days and weeks leading up to the general election, President Donald Trump’s campaign has all but camped out in North Carolina, hosting a series of rallies with thousands of attendees crammed together with little physical separation from one another and minimal mask wearing, though the Trump campaign has been more proactive in handing out face coverings to attendees.

Cooper and Mandy Cohen, secretary of North Carolina’s Department of Health and Human Services, did not say Wednesday whether any positive coronavirus cases have emerged as a result of Trump’s rallies. They noted the state has struggled to get residents who test positive for COVID-19 to answer their phones and respond to questions from public health officials tracing contacts and sources of transmission. Even when people do respond and answer all questions, it can still be difficult to pinpoint an exact location where they became infected.

Cooper said white, rural voters in North Carolina have increasingly tested positive for the virus. This group represents a strong share of people who attend Trump campaign events.

Cohen’s office told The Associated Press in a statement earlier this month that it wasn’t aware of “any cases connected to rallies held by President Trump in North Carolina in September.”

The state reported its highest single-day increase of confirmed coronavirus cases

U.S. signs deal with Lilly for supply of potential COVID-19 antibody drug

(Reuters) – The U.S. Government has awarded an initial $375 million contract to drugmaker Eli Lilly and Co LLY.N to secure 300,000 doses of its potential experimental COVID-19 antibody treatment, a drug that has been touted by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Lilly will start delivering the treatment within two months of receiving an emergency use authorization from the U.S. health regulator, the company said.

The U.S. government also has the option to purchase up to an additional 650,000 vials for $812.5 million, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement.

While vaccines are seen critical to ending the pandemic, governments are increasingly looking at effective treatment options to slow the spread of the disease and kick-start economic activity.

The company submitted a request to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration earlier this month for emergency use authorization of the drug to treat mild to moderate COVID-19 patients.

The U.S. government has committed that patients will have no out-of-pocket costs for the medicine, although healthcare facilities may charge a fee for the product’s administration, Lilly said.

The antibody therapy is similar to a drug from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals REGN.O that was given to Trump during his bout with COVID-19.

The treatments belong to a class of drugs called monoclonal antibodies that are manufactured copies of antibodies created by the body to fight against an infection. Lilly’s antibody was identified from a blood sample taken from one of the first U.S. patients who recovered from COVID-19.

Study: HIV-positive adults show early signs of aging, even after antiretroviral therapy

Oct. 22 (UPI) — People with HIV may experience aging-related illnesses, such as heart disease and brain disorders, earlier than those without the virus, even if they have been on antiretroviral therapy, a study published Thursday by the journal Pathogens and Immunity found.

The analysis, which compared 15 HIV-positive adults on antiretroviral therapy to 15 age-matched people without the virus, found that those being treated with the drugs showed increased evidence of cellular aging, the researchers said.

Antiretroviral therapies, or ART, are intended to slow the progression of HIV and reduce the level of the virus in the body.

While ART has led to people with HIV living longer, they are still at higher risk for having a “reduced healthspan” — or developing age-related health complications — than those without the virus, according to the researchers.

“Most individuals living with HIV probably already know that they are facing more health challenges than their uninfected peers, so the main takeaway from this study is that we’re now beginning to better understand why that is,” study co-author Beth D. Jamieson told UPI.

“It’s clear that the antiretroviral therapies aren’t causing this aging acceleration. It appears to be the virus and … the antiretroviral therapies appear to help reverse some of this aging, but the changes are less robust and much slower than we’d like to see,” said Jamieson, a professor of medicine in the division of hematology and oncology at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine.

About 1.4 million adults in the United States have HIV, and nearly 40,000 are diagnosed with the virus each year, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

Research suggests that ART drugs bolster the immune systems of those with the disease, allowing them to better fight off infections and, effectively, enabling them to live close-to-normal lifespans.

However, treated HIV-infected adults still experience earlier declines in physical functions, as well as higher rates of heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, kidney failure, liver cancer and neurological disorders than otherwise healthy adults, Jamieson and her colleagues said.

For their research, the UCLA-based team assessed 30 study participants — 15 receiving ART for HIV and 15 healthy controls — for signs of cellular aging. DNA samples collected from all study subjects were analyzed using the epigenetic clock, a biochemical test used to measure aging.

In the HIV-positive participants, DNA samples were collected at three points — six months to one year before starting ART, six to 12 months after beginning treatment and 18 to 24 months later.

Before starting ART, the DNA participants with HIV all had significantly higher levels of four measures for cellular aging — age acceleration residual, extrinsic epigenetic age acceleration, phenotypic epigenetic age acceleration and Grim epigenetic age acceleration — than the uninfected adults, the researchers said.

That remained true six to 12 months after the HIV-positive participants started ART. However, 18 to 24 months after starting therapy, only levels of residual and extrinsic epigenetic age acceleration remained higher in those with HIV, the analysis

About the Neo-NosticsRapid Test Kits

The Neo-Nostics 2019-nCoV Antibody Detection Reagent Kit (Colloidal Gold Method) has the advantage of rapidity, convenience, high accuracy, and can make up for the shortcomings of professional requirements, time consumption and low positive detection rate of PCR nucleic acid detection, and can be used as an important supplementary detection method for the diagnosis of coronal pneumonia.

Through detection and calculation, it is found that the comprehensive accuracy rate of the Neo-Nostics2019-nCoV IgM Detection Reagent is higher than 95%.

During the worst period of the epidemic in China, the reagent kit was donated to hospitals and the CDC in the most severely infected areas of Hubei for clinical auxiliary diagnosis. At present, the verification reports made by three clinical units prove that the positive detection rate of clinically confirmed cases has reached 92%, which has exceeded the general detection effect. Not only negative or positive results can be detected, but also the early, middle and or recovery period of virus infection can be distinguished by the positive strength of IgM or IgG.
