Berner Middle School Resumes In-Person Classes Ahead Of Schedule

MASSAPEQUA, NY — Students at Berner Middle School were able to resume their classes ahead of schedule after a student contracted the coronavirus and forced the school to go to distance learning.

The announcement of the positive case and the decision to go to distance learning was made on Monday. At the time, Superintendent Lucille Iconis said that the school would be using distance learning for the entire week. But Wednesday, Iconis sent a letter to parents saying that in-person classes would resume on Thursday.

“Be assured that we will continue to adhere to the safety measures in place so we can keep everyone safe and healthy,” Iconis wrote. “All parents are reminded to continue to closely monitor their child for any signs of symptoms, complete the district’s health screening form each morning, and to discuss any medical concerns with their child’s physician. These measures are necessary. It is imperative that we work together to mitigate this virus.”

However, the school is not completely reopening. In-person classes are resuming as normal for sixth graders. But seventh and eighth graders will be using the hybrid model, where they alternate between in-person and online classes. Students who have been ordered to quarantine will have to use remote learning.

On Monday, Iconis said that the student who had tested positive for the virus had “greater contact” with other students and staff. The Nassau County Department of Health told the district to shut down the school. After contact tracing and sanitizing the building, the DOH said the district could resume classes.

HSG Foresees Major Potential Financial Impact on Employed Physician Networks and Medical Groups from 2021 Proposed Medicare Physician Fee Schedule

Louisville, KY, Oct. 21, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — HSG, a national healthcare consulting firm, has published a detailed evaluation of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) 2021 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) Proposed Rule, which is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2021, if approved in the Final Rule. The advisors at HSG believe the proposed changes may have a significant potential impact on physician compensation and urge healthcare executives to start planning for these proposed changes. The agency’s Fee Schedule changes cover everything from Work Relative Value Unit (wRVU) values for specific Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes to changes in the scope of practice policies for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and changes related to CMS’s quality payment program.

With more than a 10% decrease in the MPFS conversion factor, services that do not have any change in Relative Value Unit values will see a decrease in Medicare payment at the projected rate of more than 10%. The decreased reimbursement will not be fully offset by any reimbursement increases realized through the Quality Payment Program paths. Changes related to outpatient and office evaluation and management (E&M) service code determinations and requirements, along with permanent and temporary additions to telehealth codes, will add to compensation complications. The redefined E&M code selection criteria will now be driven by medical decision making (MDM) or time spent alone – with no direct contribution by history and/or exam elements.

“Assuming these changes are included when the Final Rule is published in early December, many industry organizations, consultancies, and provider advocacy groups are projecting significant increases in provider productivity-based compensation if the providers’ E&M profile remains unchanged,” explained Neal Barker, Partner at HSG. “Ultimately, hospitals and health systems may face a situation in which payments from Medicare will decrease while their physician compensation requirements will significantly increase based on the widespread use of wRVU-based compensation models for employed physicians and APPs.”

As the roll-out date for the new Fee Schedule grows closer, HSG is working with healthcare systems to help them gain an understanding of the potential impact on the network.  Then HSG works with the organization to build a model to address changes to wRVU targets and bonus conversion factors that yield productive compensation levels that are financially sustainable and uphold fair market value and commercial reasonableness. Coincident with the compensation impact review, HSG conducts a series of provider

Disneyland Reopening Schedule, Delays Threaten Nearby Businesses

ANAHEIM, CA — It may be “A Small World After All,” as the song goes, but Disneyland is too big to reopen at present, according to the governor’s office. On Tuesday, the state’s newly released reopening guidelines showed that while some small amusement parks may reopen, large-scale theme parks will be at the back of the line.

The much-awaited reopening guidelines, shared Tuesday by California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly, show that Disneyland Resort and California’s large-scale theme parks may not reopen until the county reaches the Yellow (minimal) Tier, likely not in 2020.

The reopening has been a concern not just for Walt Disney Co. but also for the city of Anaheim, which has suffered the loss of multiple businesses and livelihoods in the wake of the park closure.

Many Anaheim businesses depend on the Disneyland Resort for their survival, from restaurants to transportation and hotels.

The Castle Inn, one such business, sits directly across the street from the Disneyland main gates. With its royal theme and walkable distance to the resort, the 50-year-old hotel is a favorite among guests.

Today, the lobby sits empty. The hotel has no guests and no revenue, though there are many expenses that go with maintaining the property, according to owner Bharat Patel.

Seven months into the coronavirus pandemic, his hotel is devoid of guests. There are no little princesses running through the grounds or parents chasing after them. Still, to Patel, that isn’t the hardest part.

The most difficult thing he’s experienced thus far in the coronavirus pandemic is being forced to let a significant number of his staff go, he says.

“I still think about them every day,” he said, voice full of emotion. “How do you tell someone that put their blood sweat and tears into your dream that you don’t have the work for them?”

Patel doesn’t know when he can reopen, and that uncertainty keeps him up at night.

“I don’t think we can hold on much longer,” he says. “We need help.”

To Patel, Anaheim is a family, and that family is hurting.

Orange County currently sits at the second, or Red (Substantial), tier of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Blueprint For A Safer Economy. For weeks, the county has teetered on the verge of the Orange tier; however, the case counts for daily positive cases remain stubbornly at the Substantial tier rankings.

As of Tuesday, Orange County is experiencing 4.6 new daily cases per 100,000 people, still in the Red tier. Meanwhile, the testing positivity percentage remains in the middle of the Orange tier rankings, at 3.2 positive tests per 100,000 people tested.

Disneyland will not be allowed to reopen until those two positivity percentages are solidly under 2 percent, according to the governor’s current plan.

According to the state, management can set to work
