Cosmetic Dentist Discusses Increased Demand for Cosmetic Dentistry

Reality TV shows, celebrity culture and magazine have skyrocketed the demand for cosmetic dentistry – but for many it is more than just aesthetics, according to a Fort Lauderdale Cosmetic Dentist.

The Advanced Dental Wellness Center in Fort Lauderdale has seen a huge growth in requests for procedures like veneers and whitening to help improve appearances.

According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 86% of people request cosmetic dentistry for physical attractiveness and self-esteem and 46% are for health reasons.

A spokesman for the dental clinic said: “There is no doubt that the demand for cosmetic dentistry has increased as the popularity of celebrity culture and reality TV shows has taken off. People are under a lot of pressure to look a certain way and they are prepared to spend money to achieve that look.

“But not everyone has superficial reasons for wanting dental work to improve their smile.  We have a large percentage of people coming to us for help because the way their teeth look is impacting romantic relationships, affecting their self esteem and preventing them from progressing at work.

“If someone has severely crooked teeth, discolored teeth, gaps between their teeth and this is stopping them from smiling properly or talking clearly to someone, then something needs to be done. Many people become shy or introverted, because they are so self-conscious of people looking at their teeth and judging them, it can hold them back in every aspect of their lives.

“This is where cosmetic dental procedures are wonderful. Teeth whitening, veneers and bridges can all help to rectify these imperfections and transform someone’s smile. Of course, it will depend on every individual and their own issues as to the best treatment approach for someone, and their budget restrictions will impact on what we can do. But, we will try to provide the very best advice and find the best and most economical solution for anyone who comes to us for help.

“Our advice would always be for our patients to book in and come and see us and we can discuss all of the potential options with them and set out a treatment plan.

Increased Health Literacy Leads To Better Health Outcomes

Earlier this week, UnitedHealthGroup released a study reaffirming the importance of health literacy.

The study “illustrate[s] the importance of increasing health literacy as a key component in driving better health outcomes and improving health care affordability. Seniors — who use more health care services, have more chronic conditions, and take more medications compared to other age groups — benefit from increased health literacy levels because it helps them make informed decisions and enhances their health care experience.”

Furthermore, the statistics provided by the study are astounding. It mentions that “On average, Medicare beneficiaries in counties with the highest health literacy levels experience better outcomes than those living in counties with the lowest health literacy levels, including: 31% more flu shots, 26% fewer avoidable hospitalizations, 18% fewer emergency department visits, 13% lower costs per beneficiary, [and] 9% fewer hospital readmissions.”

Indeed, these numbers are eye-opening.

But this focus on health literacy is by no means new or groundbreaking. In fact, large-scale health organizations such as the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) have emphasized the importance of health literacy for many years.

The AAFP states: “Health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health care decisions. The American Academy of Family Physicians champions the promotion of health literacy throughout all aspects of the healthcare system including but not limited to strategic and organizational design, research and quality improvement metrics and provision of direct patient care, especially to patients with low health literacy. Family physicians, medical staff, residents and medical students should receive training on health literacy and communication strategies to improve patient engagement and self-management.”

Accordingly, healthcare trainees at all levels are increasingly being exposed to these concepts as a means to achieve better healthcare outcomes. Now, more so than ever before, healthcare systems and leaders are finally starting look at systemic tools and ways in which healthcare outcomes can be improved, rather than fostering a “reactive” approach.

Regardless, as empircal research continues to show the potentially substantial and numerous benefits to the healthcare system, investing in health literacy may indeed be a viable investment for the future of patient care.

First, coronavirus infections increased. Then, hospitalizations. Now, deaths are on the rise.

Coronavirus infections soared this week to record levels, hospitalizations are up in almost every state, and now — predictably, but slowly — deaths are rising, too.

South Dakota is among states setting records for coronavirus cases in recent days. For rural facilities such as Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, the pandemic presents particular challenges.

The nation passed another milestone Friday with 9 million confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic, including more than 98,000 new cases, a daily record. More than 1,000 deaths in the United States from the novel coronavirus were reported each day Wednesday and Thursday, according to health data analyzed by The Washington Post, continuing an upward trend that began two weeks ago.

All signs indicate that this isn’t a blip but rather a reflection of a massive surge in infections that, without a dramatic effort to reverse the trend, will drive up the death toll for weeks to come. At least 229,000 people in the United States have died of covid-19, the disease caused by the virus.

But the mortality numbers have become political fodder on the campaign trail. Depending on whom you listen to, the coronavirus just isn’t that deadly anymore. Or it’s killing people in droves.

The truth is that mortality rates have improved, but the accelerating spread of the virus is driving up the absolute numbers of deaths.

Doctors have reported better outcomes thanks to improved techniques for treating patients and the use of the steroid dexamethasone and the antiviral remdesivir. In a widely reported study, researchers at NYU Langone Health found that the death rate among more than 5,000 patients in the system’s three hospitals dropped from 25.6 percent in March to 7.6 percent in August.

Still, this remains a potentially deadly disease, and a large proportion of the population is still vulnerable to infection. With the number of infections hitting daily records, there is reason to expect that deaths will keeping rising until the spread of the virus is contained.

Deaths lag infections by many weeks. In hard-hit North Dakota, daily infections have doubled since the end of September, while the average number of deaths from covid-19 is up 50 percent. In Indiana, cases are up 150 percent in that time, and deaths are up 93 percent.

In Wisconsin, cases began spiking in early September, and deaths began to rise sharply at the end of the month. Of the 2,029 deaths there from the pandemic, more than half have occurred since Sept. 25.

President Trump and his son Donald Trump Jr. have in recent days said there has been an excessive focus on infections rather than deaths, which have not risen as quickly and remain lower than in the early days of the pandemic.

Northern Kentucky dentist says COVID-19 stress is causing increased cases of cracked teeth

People who grind their teeth in the middle of the night are not uncommon. But left unchecked, which has happened because of the pandemic, all those grinding teeth can cause real trouble.Dr. Shelley Shearer knows that better than most.Shearer, who has an office in Florence, said COVID-19-related stress is causing more people to grind their teeth more intensely while they’re sleeping. The result is a growing number of cases of cracked teeth.”Everyone’s stressed. They’re stressed about their job. They’re stressed about getting their kids to school. They’re stressed about money and they are grinding and clinching their teeth,” Shearer said. She said anyone with a cracked or chipped tooth will know something is wrong because they’ll feel a dull, aching pain in their mouth that can turn into a sharp pain quickly. It can be even worse for those who have a history of grinding their teeth, especially if they’ve avoided the dentist because they’ve been worried about getting infected with coronavirus.”Sometimes people, if they’ve been grinding and clenching for years, and then you add on this extra stress, now they’ve got, maybe, a fractured tooth that’s turned into – where they need a root canal or it needs to be taken out and they’re swollen,” Shearer said.Fortunately, there are other remedies besides just a root canal or a pulled tooth. Shearer said she can fit patients with a bite guard that they can wear while they’re sleeping or place a crown on a cracked tooth to help things get back to normal.Shearer also wants to reassure her patients that it’s as safe as it can be to come to her office for an appointment. She cited a recent report in the Journal of the American Dental Association that shows less than 1 percent of dentists nationwide have tested positive for COVID-19. The report said the result is “far below that of other health professionals in the U.S.”

First Response Pregnancy Test Survey Reveals Women Are Putting Off Having Children Due to Increased Uncertainty During COVID-19

OB/GYN Mary Jane Minkin, M.D. offers advice to address pregnancy anxieties

According to a new First Response survey about the current family planning goals of 3,000 US women aged 18-35, nearly 20% say they’re uncertain of their trying to conceive (TTC) plans while 38% are intentionally putting off conceiving during the pandemic due to anxiety and stress. Mary Jane Minkin, Clinical Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Yale Medical School tells women to follow simple safety measures when considering getting pregnant during this unprecedented time.

“Women are understandably facing a lot of anxiety when considering their family planning journey and many are waiting for a vaccine before starting or growing their family,” says Minkin. “However, if the time is right to have a baby, go ahead and book an appointment with a medical provider, take extra precautions, utilize telehealth appointments, and implement precautions based on the advice from healthcare providers.”

Dr. Minkin offers the following advice to address pregnancy related anxieties:

  1. Book a preconception appointment. OB-GYN’s, doctors, and nurse practitioners are available via phone and in person to answer all questions and health concerns. If you need help finding a healthcare provider, contact your nearest hospital clinic, community health center external icon, or health department. Medical visits can also be handled virtually by scheduling a telehealth appointment, which can be helpful to address any questions you may have.

  2. When unsure, take a pregnancy test. Stress and anxiety can trigger symptoms that mimic those of pregnancy, like morning sickness, food cravings, mood swings, and fatigue – so the best way to know if pregnant is to use a reliable pregnancy test like First Response Early Result so you don’t need to leave the house until COVID-19 settles down. A test can be revealing up to six days before a missed period. Be sure to call your doctor right away if the test is positive to put a proper plan of action in place.

  3. Be wary of listening to friends or relying on Dr. Google. While the experiences of others or the internet can hold insights, when it comes to making important personal health decisions make sure to consult a medical professional to confirm whether what you’ve been told or read is really true. Other reliable online sources include ACOG.org, CDC.gov, and WHO.int.

  4. Stay current on all vaccines. Pregnancy can alter the immune system and lead to an increased risk of respiratory infections. A flu shot can help mom and baby by causing the body to create protective antibodies (proteins produced by the body to fight off diseases.) The whooping cough (Tdap) vaccine will help protect your baby against whooping cough, which can mimic symptoms of COVID-19.

  5. Maintain overall health. Make sure to have at least a 30-day supply of the medicines you need on hand, stop smoking, eat healthy foods and supplement with folic acid. Try an easy to take pre-natal vitamin like the vitafusion gummy vitamin. It is also important to avoid alcohol and limit caffeine intake
