This Guy Carried a Full-Size Piano Up a Mountain as Part of a Fitness Stunt

A Welsh athlete has successfully carried a full-sized piano up Garth mountain in Wales. Extreme adventurer and fitness coach Max Glover hauled the 400-pound musical instrument up the 2-mile ascent on Sunday to raise money for the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital Charity.

The 33-year-old former Marine is no stranger to intense challenges, running a marathon in 2019 with a 1.7 ton car attached to his back. Having completed such a grueling test of endurance, he decided to take on another unconventional feat this year. “I have always been a bit different, I guess,” Glover told Runner’s World UK.

Determined to pursue his goal and to raise money for the hospital that supported his close friend, he began a strength training program last year. The strict plan entailed “squats, Romanian deadlifts, farmers walks, weighted step-ups and other similar compound exercises.” When lockdown restricted access to gyms, Glover relocated his training to outdoor spaces.

“I just carried heavy things in a backpack and just kept increasing the weight and walking up hills,” he reveals. “I bought a bergen (infantry rucksack) as I know they can handle a lot of weight and put dumbbells in there to take to the field or park.”

Glover was faced with a series of obstacles throughout this training period, including injury and illness. His preparation was thwarted by Achilles pain in July and a sudden onset of poor health in the two weeks prior to the event.

Rather than demotivating him, these adversities only pushed him harder to accomplish his goal. “I think being in the Marines was the foundation for having the strength of mind and determination to complete something like this,” he says.

Accompanied by a small group of supporters called “Team Lungs,” he reached the summit in 3 hours and 45 minutes. After removing the weight from his back and gulping down a well-earned coffee, the victorious athlete and his crew were treated to a beautiful piano performance from a little girl.

Tom Boyden, one half of the YouTube fitness channel Juji & Tom, has been on a body transformation journey this year, having lost 37 pounds over the summer. In a new video, Tom breaks down some of the changes he made to his lifestyle in order to aid his weight loss and improve his performance in his workouts.

“If you look at the timeline, I progressively went from 197 pounds in February… then 190 in May,” he says. “And then I just reduced my calories, and slowly started upping my activity. So from May to now, about five months. The vast majority of it has happened in five months. I just had a vast layer of fat over a bunch of nice powerlifting muscles.”

Paying closer attention to nutrition has been the one change that’s had the single biggest impact, Tom explains. “I train all the time, and I work out, but it doesn’t matter if your diet is shit,” he says, adding that he has been finding lower sugar and calorie alternatives to his favorite foods, and reducing his fat intake. He has also been cooking more after falling out of the habit.

In addition to his diet, Tom changed the focus of his exercise, so that he was primarily doing strength training and aesthetic-led bodybuilding workouts. “It’s not that I didn’t train hard over the last two years, but we trained hard over a three-hour workout period,” he says. “Now, the main thing is training, diet, and overall activity, and just what we do in a day.”

“I do faster cardio every morning, walking after meals, just walking in general, riding my bike, trampoline, skateboarding, just all kinds of things,” he continues. “If I’m not active during the day, I’m like ‘what’s going on, why didn’t I go for a walk?’ And I’ll just go stretch, or do some mobility in the garage.”

In the video, Tom also shares how he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease as a teenager, recalling how a serious flare-up with his illness this year led to him being hospitalized. But after recovering, he’s back on his fitness routine. He also credits a variety of other semi-related lifestyle changes with having had a positive impact on maintaining his weight loss, including less stress and travel, which have helped him maintain a good sleep schedule and ensure he has the required levels of energy for his workouts.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden called President Donald Trump “a very confused guy” when the president falsely claimed Biden supports “socialized medicine” during Thursday night’s presidential debate. 

In a discussion about healthcare, Trump said Biden’s plan to expand the Affordable Care Act by adding a public option would “destroy” Medicare and Social Security, and amount to socialism. The former vice president, who doesn’t support Sen. Bernie Sanders’ Medicare for All proposal, went on the attack in response. 

“He’s a very confused guy,” Biden said. “He thinks he’s running against somebody else. He’s running against Joe Biden. I beat all those other people because I disagreed with them.” 

The president also falsely claimed that 180 million Americans would lose their private health insurance under Biden’s plan. While Sanders’ Medicare for All proposal would eliminate private insurance, Biden’s plan wouldn’t. 

Biden’s plan, which he called “Bidencare,” would allow Americans under 65 to receive Medicare — a public option on the healthcare exchanges. His plan would also seek to make healthcare plans on the exchanges more affordable by lowering the limit on how much plans can cost and get rid of the cap on insurance subsidies.

Trump didn’t deliver any new details about his long-promised healthcare proposal. 

The president’s domestic policy chief recently told Business Insider that an Obamacare replacement is still “being worked on.”
