Clocks ‘should not go back to fight COVID misery’

There has been increased support for abolishing putting the clocks back this weekend so that UK doesn’t face shorter days along with increasing coronavirus restrictions.

The clocks are due to go back one hour on 25 October at 2am, bringing an end to British Summer Time (BST) and reverting back to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

This will mean lighter mornings but an earlier sunset, with darkness due to fall at around 4pm in December.

But Chris Difford, a founding member of the band Squeeze, has now set up a petition urging the government to not put the clocks back, saying the new normal is frightening for a lot of people and that natural light is “one of the greatest tonics for mental health”.

Financial expert Martin Lewis also urged the government to abolish the change this year, saying it would “cheer most of the nation up in this torrid time”.

Addressing Boris Johnson on Twitter, Lewis wrote: “Don’t put the clocks back this Sunday. Allow people a little more daylight in the afternoon/evening to go outside and enjoy.”

The calls come after the European Parliament backed a proposal to stop changing the clocks in the European Union.

If it is adopted, EU nations could change the clocks for the last time as early as 2021.

Difford has set up a petition calling for the change not to take place as the country grapples with the virus and while people “get on their feet”.

He told the PA news agency: “I think it’s particularly difficult in this pandemic for younger people to be positive about what’s going on, and I think for them to spend most of their time in the dark is only going to make things worse for them.

“I’m a very tiny voice in all of this, I understand that, and some people will probably think it’s a bit of a whim and a bit of a mad thing to ask for, but who knows, you never know where these things can go.”

Difford added that it would be “amazing” if businesses allowed and encouraged their workers to take half an hour during their working day to get outside in the fresh air.

Watch: All you need to know on the clocks going back

He said: “Like having light in the day, exercise is just as important. We are in a new situation here, this is the new now, and I believe if we are going to be saddled with the new now for a long time, people should be allowed to change the way that they live.”

Lyme disease afflicts as many as 400,000 Americans every year and can lead to a number of serious, life-threatening problems if not caught early. Leading the way in Lyme disease testing is Quidel’s innovative Sofia® 2 Lyme FIA test. This test provides a patient as well as his or her physician with indicative results within minutes as opposed to days, which has historically been the norm. Performed in the privacy of a doctor’s office or local clinic, it is also the only test that can get results from a simple finger prick of blood. Given that the vast majority of patients tested are negative, not having to wait days for test results allows physicians and nurse practitioners to more rapidly treat those patients with positive results while more quickly pursuing other diagnosis and treatment for those who test negative.

Nurse urges Montanans to take politics out of COVID fight

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — An emergency room nurse urged Montana residents to take politics out of the fight against the coronavirus Tuesday, as the number of cases in the state reached 24,000, the death toll surpassed 250 and hospitals are caring for 360 patients.

Health care workers come from a variety of political, socioeconomic and religious backgrounds, Charlotte Skinner said.

“But we’ve always found a common ground to stand on. And that common ground is called science, evidence-based practice and a patient-first mentality,” she said.

“I have never and I will never run into the room of a patient in distress and ask them how they vote,” said Skinner, a registered nurse at St. Peter’s Health in Helena. “People in health care don’t discriminate and neither does this virus.”

“I’m asking you to stop segregating yourselves into maskers and anti-maskers and to stand with us on the common ground of science and evidence, which is clearly telling us that masking works,” Skinner said.

Montana reported 706 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday and a total of 252 deaths. Of the 360 people who are hospitalized, 64 are in intensive care and 39 are on ventilators, the state health department said.

Montana has the fifth-highest rate of newly confirmed infections per capita, though the rate of deaths is among the lowest in the U.S., according to data Tuesday from Johns Hopkins.

Montana hospitals are reaching a breaking point, Skinner said. But the pressure can be relieved if a majority of residents wear masks consistently and diligently, she said.

“We are on the brink of seeing a surge capacity like we have never seen before,” Skinner warned. “And make no mistake, this will affect our ability to provide the best possible care.”

Gov. Steve Bullock also urged residents to follow guidelines such as wearing masks, washing hands and physical distancing to reduce the strain on the state’s healthcare workers.

“If all of us at times feel fatigue from this virus, imagine what an emergency room nurse feels, or other front line health care workers,” Bullock said.

In other news related to the coronavirus pandemic:

— Montana’s unemployment rate fell to 5.3% in September, down from 5.6% in August. The unemployment rate was 3.5% before the pandemic began and rose to as high as 11.9% in April. Montana’s Department of Labor has paid over $1 billion in unemployment benefits to more than 100,000 Montanans since the beginning of the pandemic, Bullock said Tuesday.

— Montana has submitted a preliminary plan to distribute a coronavirus vaccine when one becomes available, with priority given to front line health care workers, the elderly, Native Americans and those with underlying medical conditions, Bullock said.

Trump offers well-wishes to Limbaugh after cancer update: ‘An incredible man’ who ‘will continue to fight’

President TrumpDonald John TrumpNearly 300 former national security officials sign Biden endorsement letter DC correspondent on the death of Michael Reinoehl: ‘The folks I know in law enforcement are extremely angry about it’ Late night hosts targeted Trump over Biden 97 percent of the time in September: study MORE told “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday that conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh is an “incredible man” amid his battle against Stage-4 lung cancer, with the president adding “there’s never going to be a voice like Rush.”

Limbaugh, 69, told listeners on Monday that he often feels that he’s under “a death sentence” while battling cancer, with the conservative radio talk show host sharing that recent scans showed “some progression.”

“It is cancer, it eventually outsmarts pretty much everything you throw at it,” Limbaugh told his nationally syndicated program. “It’s tough to realize that the days where I do not think I’m under a death sentence are over.”

Trump joined “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday morning to praise Limbaugh. During his State of the Union address in February, Trump awarded Limbaugh the Medal of Freedom shortly after the host announced his cancer diagnosis.

“There’s never going to be a voice like Rush,” Trump told co-host Ainsley Earhardt.

“Rush is an incredible man, and his wife Kathryn, incredible people, and he is putting up a fight like … this has been going on for a long time,” the president added. “He didn’t have exactly a great prognosis when he heard about it, and this is now taking it to the next level, what he said yesterday. But he is an incredible man, and that’s very sad to hear that. However, he will continue to fight. That’s the one thing I know about him. He’s incredible.”

“From the day I came down the escalator, he was supportive of me. I didn’t have to talk to him, I didn’t have to meet with him and wine him and dine him. He was just with us because he liked what I was saying,” Trump later noted. “And I became friendly with him.”

Limbaugh — widely considered to be the most influential host among conservatives — announced in January he had been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer.

His nationally syndicated show, which began 31 years ago, attracts 15.5 million listeners per day, according to Talkers Magazine.
