Dentist kidnapped from Hyderabad rescued in Andhra Pradesh, within 24 hours- The New Indian Express

HYDERABAD: Within 24 hours of getting kidnapped from his dental clinic in Hyderabad on Tuesday, Dr Hussain was rescued on Wednesday early morning by Andhra Pradesh police in Ananthapuram district. 

Based on a tip-off by Telangana police, their counterparts managed to intercept the vehicle in which the kidnappers were travelling to Bengaluru. A couple of men present in the vehicle were caught while a few others managed to escape. 

The AP police will hand over the victim, suffered mild injuries due to assault, to the Telangana force.

Interestingly, the kidnappers had demanded Dr Hussain’s family a ransom of Rs 10 crore in the form of Bitcoins. 

According to police, the kidnappers got into Dr Hussain’s dental clinic in Kismatpur under Rajendranagar police limits posing as patients. Minutes after entering his room, they kidnapped the dentist around 1 pm, forced him into his own four-wheeler and drove away. 

Later, four more accused joined the gang and the vehicle proceeded towards the Bengaluru Highway. In the meantime, Rajendranagar police received information about the incident, tracked the vehicle and alerted the AP police. 

Personnel posted in checkpoints in Ananthapuram were quickly alerted who checked every vehicle and later rescued Dr Hussain. In a video recorded after his rescue, the dentist said that around five burqa-clad persons kidnapped him from his clinic at around 1 pm on Tuesday.

“They knew that I live in Prestige Royal Woods In Kismatpur. They took my vehicle’s key that was kept on the table. I tried to resist and screamed twice as well but there was no one around. They forced me in to my own vehicle and took me away.

“Later, they changed the vehicle. They took me in an auto and kept me in a room for a while where they provided me water and spoke properly. Then they again put me in a four-wheeler and took me away. I could not see my watch but it must have been around 2 am then,” Dr Hussain said.

The dentist’s face was completely covered and his hands were tied when he was rescued. Dr Hussain also runs a real estate business and well off.

Aditi Chauhan’s academy launches online sports coaching & fitness programs- The New Indian Express

NEW DELHI: Indian goalkeeper Aditi Chauhan, who founded the She Kicks Football Academy in 2018 to provide a platform for female players to achieve their goals in professional football, has announced two online sports coaching and fitness programs for boys and girls.

The online programs, which are designed by Aditi, include ‘Score from Home’ (for football aspirants) and ‘Sweat It’ (for everyone looking to lead a healthy lifestyle).

Each of the sessions will be planned and conducted by trained professionals in the field and will be carried out through video conferencing tools. Aditi will be closely monitoring both the programs to ensure that the best quality services are provided.

The batch for each of the programs will comprise of 15 individuals and WhatsApp groups will be created for regular feedback and for various important notifications and downloadable content to be shared.

Feedback will be taken from the participants every week to ensure the quality of the programs. Both programs have no age limit. The sessions which will be one hour long will be organised on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Speaking on the programs, Aditi, who is represented by sports marketing firm Baseline Ventures said, “Maintaining fitness is crucial for everyone and therefore we have decided to organise two programs with one catering to individuals who want to learn the game of football and the other catering to participants who are looking to keep fit and healthy without concentrating on any specific sport.”

“After my friends and family came to me for guidance regarding health and fitness, I realised that many people want to be aware of the ways of leading a sustainable long-term healthy lifestyle and therefore we decided to create the Sweat It program for one and all,” she added.

BENGALURU: Garden city, pub city, and now fitness capital… Bengaluru, according to a recent survey, leads the way when it comes to fitness and health consciousness.

A survey by Gympik to assess the impact of Covid-19 on India’s fitness behaviour, shows that the city tops the list in the virtual fitness landscape, with 58 per cent Bengalureans surveyed working out at least 3-4 times a week. Mumbai, with 46 per cent, Delhi/NCR, with 42 pre cent, take the second and third spot, respectively.

With more than 50,000 respondents from across geographies, the report tracks key wellness trends such as mental health, emerging fitness solutions, and new industry challenges.

The city’s vast population of IT professionals, who work long hours and are prone to health issues, have realised that they need to up their fitness quotient to sustain their line of work.

“Because they have travelled to the West a lot on work-related projects, their exposure to Western themes like CrossFit, long-distance running and yoga – which people are lapping up because of the way the it has propagated there – have influenced them to become fitness conscious,” says Abinav Shankar Narayan, founder, Namma CrossFit, adding that only those who liked lifting weights are eager to return to gyms as training at home does not allow people to lift and drop heavy weights.

Agrees nutrition advisor Shalini Manglani who feels that people in the “tech city” are more savvy with the virtual medium.

According to fitness consultant and personal trainer Bhaskar Prabhu, Bengaluru has fitness enthusiasts who are serious about their workouts.

“Many clients have set up a small gym in their houses so as to not skip their usual routine. This way they don’t have to worry about the safety issues involved in going to a gym,” says Prabhu.

With many living with senior family members, and not wanting to take a risk, Prabhu is not surprised that they have easily adapted to the virtual route.

“This way they feel they are keeping fit and building immunity without stepping out,” he says. 

Bengaluru is a hub for fitness seekers and experts, says Amaresh Ojha, founder-CEO, Gympik.

“Even before Covid-19, Bengaluru had the highest traction for online gym membership sales via our platform, which clearly shows Bengalureans’ inclination towards fitness and wellness,” he adds, pointing out that the average resident in the city is more than enthusiastic about trying out new things, especially when it involves technology.

“It’s this attitude which has made Bangalore top the charts in adopting virtual fitness services as well,” he says.

MYSURU: While cycling on holidays with friends is a joyous pastime, this 49-year-old dentist from Mysuru is riding the sports track for the ‘long run’. Dr Usha Hegde is one passionate athlete whose love for sports simply proves age is just a number.

Originally from Bengaluru, Dr Usha moved to Mysuru. She underwent her first serious athletic long-distance training in 1987 at the Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. Over time, she learnt to cycle, swim, run and trek, and has participated in several events – endurance running, duathlon (cycle and run), triathlon (swim, cycle and run), winning medals and accolades.

Running the 10K and half-marathons for 10 years made her take on the more exhilarating full marathon – a gruelling race covering 42.2 km. She started cycling through Mysuru-Ooty, Mysuru-Goa, and Manali-Leh. Her race to the triathlon track has been gradual. “Triathlon is very challenging because it involves swimming, cycling and running in one race. Even if one manages all the three, doing it as a single sport, back-to-back needs a lot of physical adaptations and a tough mental makeup. But with proper training, it is not impossible,” she says.

Speaking about the prospects, she adds, “Triathlon is an expensive sport, not just participating in an Ironman event, but also training for it since we need to possess a lot of things. For elite triathletes, there are sponsors, but generally, it is self-funded. However, the sport is picking up in India now.” She says, “After training hard, participating in an Ironman event is like an icing on the cake.” Dr Usha has some advice for budding triathletes. She feels that one needs to understand the different aspects of the sport, train sensibly with a proper regimen.

And how does a dentist balance her profession and passion for sport? “It’s just a matter of prioritising our passions and work and managing time appropriately,” says Dr Usha. “I wake up at 4 am and start practice by 4.30 am. I neither watch a lot of TV nor go out much. My fitness time ranges from 7 hours a week to about 16 hours, based on the event and training plan,” she says. Dr Usha follows a balanced diet, eating three proper meals and two small bites in between. She has avoided junk food since childhood. Dr Usha is married to orthopaedist Dr Ajay Hegde and is the mother of two children.

Besides being a good sportswoman, she has been strong in academics as well. She was the university first rank-holder in graduation and bagged three gold medals too. A word of motivation for women who wish to power the race track. Says Dr Usha: “The sheer role of women makes it difficult for them to prioritise health over others at home. But we women should make time for ourselves, and not give up on our passions.”

People make a beeline for fake Covid medicine, drugs controller intervenes- The New Indian Express

KOZHIKODE:  Thanks to an ENT physician’s ‘discovery’ of nasal drops which can ‘resist Covid’ and a prominent vernacular daily reporting it, a medical store in Koyilandy here is making a quick buck.  E Sukumaran, a Koyilandy-based senior ENT surgeon and former deputy director of health department, has claimed that nasal drops — the ‘medication’ has a 25 per cent glucose content — can eliminate the coronavirus from the throat itself. 

He also claimed that his findings had been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), which has forwarded it to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). “ The PMO had informed me that the ICMR had deputed  Tripti Khanna, a scientist, to conduct further studies on it. But I never claimed that my findings were approved by either the PMO or the ICMR,” said Sukumaran.

Though scientists and the medical fraternity have outrightly rejected Sukumaran’s claims, calling them highly unscientific and totally misleading, what happened in Koyilandy was that people thronged a drug store which started selling this glucose-based nasal drop. A 15 ml bottle was priced at `50 in the beginning. Later, the price was slashed to `30 and now it is being sold for `20. This medical store has special licence which allows it to sell drugs manufactured by mixing the components. 

“People queue up in front of the medical store to buy the drug. Though many of them were aware that it doesn’t prevent Covid, they are convinced that it will not cause any side effects either. The drug store is the biggest beneficiary of this fake discovery,” said a health department source. However, the biggest threat posed by this drug is that it will give a false sense of Covid immunity to gullible people and instigate them to breach Covid protocol. This correspondent bought the bottle directly from the said store without prescription. Along with the drug, there was also a piece of advice on how to administer it: “Two droplets in each nostril twice daily.” 

Meanwhile, after coming to know of the ‘miracle discovery’ through TNIE, the state drugs controller has ordered a probe. Sujith Kumar K, Assistant Drugs Controller,    Kozhikode, told TNIE that he had sent two of his officials to investigate the matter. According to him, he will see to it that the nasal drop is not sold without a doctor’s prescription. “We cannot prevent the sale of glucose water if there is a prescription as it is being used for other purposes such as drip. But it cannot be sold as a remedy for Covid,” he said.

K P Aravindan,  pathologist and member of the expert panel on Covid-19,  said no glucose containing water is used as nasal drops for any illness. “Bodies like the IMA should issue an advisory against such fake Covid drugs,” he said.

Indian women’s hockey team vice captain Savita Punia- The New Indian Express

BENGALURU: Savita Punia, vice captain of the Indian women’s hockey team, has stated they had come prepared for a long camp when they returned to the Sports Authority of India facility following a six-week break in August.

“When we returned to SAI Bengaluru from a six-week break in August, we had come prepared for a long camp. This is good because we will get good continuity in our regime and we are working on rebuilding our game, fitness etc,” Savita said.

“The team is grateful to Hockey India and SAI for ensuring our preparations for the Olympic Games is unaffected despite the on-going battle with the pandemic. As players, we are taking several precautions during practice schedules, following the SOPs and we are taking extra care about ourselves too, in terms of recovery, rest etc in order to avoid injuries,” she added.

The team will begin their Olympic campaign against World Champions Netherlands next year in Tokyo. Though India has not faced the Dutch team in any major tournament in the recent past, they are very aware of how the team plays.

With both chief coach Sjoerd Marijne as well as analytical coach Janneke Schopman from the Netherlands, the duo is well-versed with the playing style of the Dutch national team.

“We have not played Netherlands national team in the recent past but we follow their matches closely and we end up talking to coaches Sjoerd and Janneke about the team’s playing style,” Savita said.

“Since both coaches are from Netherlands, they have a lot of knowledge about how the team plays. Netherlands are undoubtedly aggressive and tactically very sound. Our first match at the Olympics will surely be challenging,” she added.

In the upcoming FIH Hockey Pro League matches scheduled for 27 and 29 October in Amsterdam, the Netherlands will take on Great Britain.

“Both are very strong teams and it will be very exciting to watch them in action. I feel both matches will be quite closely fought. It will be interesting to see how both teams fair especially after not having played high-intensity matches in a long time due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We as a team will definitely be following these matches closely as it will provide great insights into their game,” Savita said.
