Heartbreak after flowers laid in memory of dentist who died with Covid are removed by council

The partner of a much-loved dental surgeon who died after contracting coronavirus said he was left “heartbroken” when the council removed floral tributes laid outside the practice in her memory.

Dr Grazyna Pawlak had travelled to Poland for an operation on her shoulder in July, but ended up staying longer than anticipated to care for her elderly mother.

She had been due to return home to Prestatyn last month, but was unable to fly back due to covid restrictions.

The 69-year-old, who worked at My Dentist on Prestatyn High Street for 14 years, contracted coronavirus and passed away with breathing difficulties last week.

Her devastated partner Kev Thomas arranged for a small memorial to take place outside the practice, where her colleagues laid bunches of flowers on a nearby bench to pay their respects.

But they were removed on Tuesday by Denbighshire Council, who have since apologised for the “error” and pledged to replace them.

Kev, who lives on Anglesey said: “It broke my heart. I wanted to do something nice to pay tribute to Grazyna.

“I couldn’t believe it when I found out the council had removed the flowers. I was devastated, as were Grazyna’s colleagues.

“She was very highly thought of in the town and people just wanted to pay their respects as she’d worked in the practice for 14 years and had over 6,000 patients.

“It’s hard enough losing your partner, especially at this time of year, but not being able to go to her funeral and then having this happen too just set me back.”

Kev said he and Grazyna would video call each other every night since she left for Poland, but her health went downhill while she cared for her 94-year-old mother, who also caught coronavirus but recovered.

Sadly, Grazyna, who had one daughter and two grandchildren, died on November 25.

Kev described his partner of three years as someone who would “go out of her way for anyone” and “always put others first”.

She had been a dentist for over over 40 years, spending the first 28 years of her career in the city of Wroclaw.

Tributes have been paid to Grazyna on social media from members of the Prestatyn community.

One said: “Such a tragedy, lovely lady.”

Another wrote: “Very sorry for a big loss.”

One added: “May she rest now, lovely lady will be missed.”

One of Grazyna’s patients said: “Aw no, so sad she was my dentist, she was starting to teach me Polish. Love to all her friends and family.”

A Denbighshire Council spokesman said: “We would like to offer our condolences to Mr Thomas and all those affected.

“The flowers were removed in error.

“The council has spoken to Mr Thomas and apologised for the removal.

“A letter of apology will be written to staff at the dental practice and the council will replace the

OKC Dentist Working With On-Site Lab to Bring Patients Best in Cosmetic Dentistry

OKLAHOMA CITY, Dec. 2, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Providing the highest quality, longest lasting and most honest dentistry available has been a commitment of OKC dentist Dr. Chris Saxon’s since he began practicing dentistry. He is keeping this commitment by providing his patients with an on-site dental lab. This allows Dr. Saxon and his team at Saxon Dentistry to work hand in hand with the lab specialists to ensure an outstanding level of quality and service.

The Saxon Dentistry Difference

In most practices, the standard procedure is to outsource your dental lab needs. These typically include dentures, dental crowns, porcelain veneers, implant restorations and more. While convenient and often less expensive for dentists, quality and precision are often compromised. With Saxon Dentistry, this is kept on-site, ensuring greater quality control, accuracy of fit and most importantly, higher patient satisfaction.

When patients embark on full smile makeovers, dental implants, porcelain veneers and even a single crown, they are putting a lot of trust in their dentist. This trust is not taken lightly at Saxon Dentistry. The on-site lab utilizes top tier dental materials, advanced technology and employs skilled, meticulous technicians. Combining this with Dr. Saxon’s expertise allows for predictable, high quality outcomes.

When teaming up with the on-site dental lab specialist, Dr. Saxon can bring them directly into the room with the patient and together listen to the patient’s concerns. Without an on-site lab, dentists have to relay information to their labs via phone call or email. Details get lost in translation, and details matter greatly when customizing a smile for patients. Sometimes the most minor adjustment can have the biggest impact.

Smile Makeovers OKC

Dr. Saxon has a particular passion for making dentistry beautiful and natural. His keen eye for detail can make any dental restoration, from a single cracked tooth repair to dental veneers to full mouth dental implants, blend seamlessly into a smile. This has made him a highly sought after OKC cosmetic dentist and implant dentist.

“When dentistry is done to the highest level, no one should be able to detect that you’ve had dental work completed.”

He believes in meeting patients exactly where they are in life, understanding their goals and setting forth the appropriate treatment from there. There is no one size fits all dentistry in his office. Personalized care is not only necessary; it’s what every patient deserves that walks through a dentist’s door.

Get to Know Oklahoma City Native, Dr. Chris Saxon

Dr. Saxon is a native of Oklahoma City and a graduate of Putnam City North high school. He received his doctorate from the University of Oklahoma College Of Dentistry. He takes between 100-150 hours of continuing education every year, far exceeding the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry’s requirements.

Former Salem dentist, community leader Selma Pierce hit, killed by car

Selma Pierce, a well-known community leader, retired dentist and former legislative candidate, was struck and killed by a car Tuesday evening, according to the Salem Police Department.

Pierce, 66, was the wife of Bud Pierce, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for governor in 2016. Gov. Kate Brown defeated him. On Monday, KATU’s news partners reported that Bud Pierce would seek the governor’s  office in 2022.

Selma Pierce was active in her community, well-known in political circles and ran for a seat in the state House this year as a Republican. She was unable to unseat incumbent Paul Evans, a Democrat, however.

In a statement released Tuesday night, House Republican Leader Christine Drazan of Canby said Republicans in the House were devastated.

“We are profoundly saddened by this sudden loss of our friend and community leader. Selma dedicated her life to serving people. She touched the lives of thousands through volunteer dental work to at-risk populations, service on local education foundations, and her and her husband Bud’s generous support of countless community organizations,” Drazan said. “The Pierces are a pillar of the Salem community and this loss will be felt deeply across our state. Our prayers are with Bud and the entire Pierce family this evening.”

In a tweet, Gov. Brown said she and her husband, Dan, extended their condolences to the Pierce family.

“They are in our thoughts during this difficult time,” she said.

Salem police said Selma was walking on Doaks Ferry Road NW near Hidden Valley Drive when a driver of a Chevrolet SUV struck her around 5 p.m.

Police said it appeared she was in the road when she was hit. She died at the scene.

The driver stopped and cooperated with investigators.

Selma was born in San Francisco to Lawrence and Priscilla Moon.

Her grandparents immigrated to America and her legislative campaign website detailed the racism her family experienced. Upon graduating from Harvard Business School, no one would hire her first-generation-Chinese-American father and he had to settle for a job in a family member’s market. The state of California eventually hired him as an auditor for state hospitals.

Selma attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and then earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Dentistry.

She volunteered for many organizations, including Medical Teams International, Mission of Mercy, Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, OHSU Foundation Board of Trustees and many other organizations.

Selma was married to Bud, who is an oncologist, for over 35 years. They have two children, Kristina and Michael.

Dentist arrested for running over woman 2 wks ago | Delhi News

New Delhi: Two weeks after a 38-year-old woman was killed in a road accident in south Delhi’s Lado Sarai, a dentist with a private clinic in Saket has been arrested for allegedly mowing her down and fleeing from the spot.
The victim, who used to work with a private bank as a customer associate and lived on rent in Lado Sarai, was hit while crossing the road.
Police had received a call on November 17 about the accident at the Lado Sarai traffic signal. On reaching the spot, they found the woman, originally from Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, to be critically injured. She was taken to AIIMS where she was declared brought dead.
On November 26, the victim’s brother tweeted, “I lost my sister, Archana Kushwaha, in an accident on 17th Nov at Lado Sarai Signal Delhi around 8.30PM, till now no clue about car and it’s being 10 days since accident happened (sic).” He also tagged the Prime Minister’s Office, AAP and Delhi Police.
On the day of the accident, crime and forensic teams visited the spot while the victim’s body was sent for a postmortem and her family was informed.
Deputy commissioner of police (south) Atul Thakur said a case of rash driving and causing death due to negligence was registered and a hunt was launched for the accused.
“Multiple teams were formed and CCTV footage from the vicinity were scanned. Following days of surveillance, we zeroed in on a Honda City car and its driver was identified as Pankaj Sudhakar, a resident of Kalkaji Extension,” Thakur said.

A South-Delhi based dentist has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run case last month, where he allegedly ran over a woman in Saket and fled the spot. According to police, initial investigation revealed that the man, Pankaj Sudhakar (42), was allegedly speeding at the time as he had to visit another clinic in Gurgaon and was running late. DCP (South) Atul Kumar Thakur said he lives in Kalkaji Extension at a paying guest accommodation and works at a clinic in Saket.

A senior police officer said: “The incident took place on the night of November 17 when the woman, Archana Kushwa (38), who worked at Axis Bank in Gurgaon, was returning to her PG in Lado Sarai from UP’s Allahabad. Her elder brother, who lives in Dubai, had posted about the death on social media and requested immediate action.”

“Eyewitnesses told police that a Honda City hit the woman when she was crossing the road and fled the spot. She was left to bleed on the road. Locals rushed the woman to AIIMS, where doctors declared her dead on arrival,” said the officer.

The DCP said, “A case was registered under IPC section 279 (rash driving or riding vehicle on a public way) and 304 A (causing death by negligence), and investigation was started.” Police scanned around 50 CCTV cameras and found footage from one camera that showed a grey Honda City in Saket around the time of the incident. “With the help of experts, police tried to ascertain the car’s registration number. They also questioned local street vendors; one of them told police he had seen the same car in Saket earlier,” the officer said.

Police zeroed in on all Honda City cars in South Delhi, and got details of the registered owners with help from the transport authority. “A team was formed to visit homes of the owners to check their vehicles. At Sudhakar’s house, it found that his car was damaged. He was questioned and arrested,” said the officer.

According to police, during questioning, the accused told them he had stopped visiting the clinic since the incident.
