Aster has launched the #LiveBetterwithAster campaign for Dubai residents consisting of free fitness sessions with fitness experts and health checks.

The services can be availed at the DFC’s flagship Fitness Villages at Kite Beach and Al Khawaneej/ Quranic Park until November 28.

Under the #LiveBetterwithAster campaign, the healthcare provider is offering 70 per cent off on special health check packages, starting from Dh99 only which can be redeemed any time before December 31, 2020.

In addition to this, several contests are being conducted throughout the month where residents will get a chance to win gift hampers and vouchers that can be redeemed with Aster.

The entity is also the official hospital and clinics partner of Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC).

Police bust New York City party with nearly 400 people on Halloween

Police charged nine organizers in a bust of an “illegal bar/party” that had nearly 400 people in attendance in New York City, the NYC sheriff announced Saturday.

Police shut down the gathering held inside a Brooklyn warehouse early in the morning on Halloween.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Saturday warned against Halloween gatherings that increase the risk of transmitting COVID-19, tweeting “Halloween should be spooky, not scary.”

The guidelines tweeted by Cuomo say parties are particularly risky because they can bring together people from different areas for a long period of time.

British PM announces new, four-week lockdown in England

British prime minister Boris Johnson announced plans Saturday for a four-week national lockdown in England starting this week that will shut pubs, restaurants, entertainment facilities and nonessential businesses.

Schools, universities and manufacturing facilities will remain open during the period from Thursday until Dec. 2.

“Unless we act, we could see deaths in this country running at several thousand a day,” Johnson said.

Johnson said that individuals will only be allowed to leave their homes for specific reasons like medical appointments, shopping for essentials, education and work that cannot be done from their residence.

“No one wants to be imposing these kinds of measures anywhere,” the prime minister said, but added that “no responsible prime minister can ignore” the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

Professor Chris Whitty, chief medical officer for England, told reporters at a news conference that England is experiencing 50,000 new cases daily and that the figure is rising.

The first lady told Florida rallygoers at her first campaign event with her husband in 2020 that “health care for every citizen remains a priority for him, and as you have seen over these past years, he won’t stop until he gets it done.”

But in reality, Trump has made repealing the Affordable Care Act a cornerstone of his candidacy and presidency, pledging back in 2016 that he would undo the law that not only gave millions of Americans access to health insurance, but also provided protections for those with pre-existing conditions and entitled people to receive free preventive health care services.

The Trump administration is currently fighting in court to strike down the ACA and has yet to release a comprehensive health care plan to replace it.
If the court wipes away Obamacare, it would have a sweeping impact on the nation’s health care system and on the lives of tens of millions of Americans — not only for the roughly 20 million people who’ve gained coverage on the Affordable Care Act exchanges and through the expansion of Medicaid to low-income adults. The law is also what allows parents to keep their children on their health insurance plans until age 26 and obtain free mammograms, cholesterol checks and birth control.
One of its most popular provisions is its strong protections for those with pre-existing conditions, including barring insurers from denying coverage or charging higher premiums based on people’s health histories. As part of what he touted as his larger health care “vision,” the President signed an executive order in September stating that it’s US policy that people who suffer from pre-existing conditions will be protected. But that protection likely won’t mean much if there’s no legislation passed by Congress ready to replace the ACA if it’s overturned. The law also serves as a safety net for those who lose their job-based health coverage, as millions have this year amid pandemic-fueled layoffs.
And despite the first lady’s assertion that “health care for every citizen,” her husband has been largely critical of universal health care plans.

In her swing state pitch less than a week before Election Day, the first lady focused largely on the President’s accomplishments from his first term and echoing some of her husband’s campaign themes.

“For those of you still deciding who to vote for on Tuesday, I hope what I have to say will prove to you that a vote for President Trump is a vote for a better America,” the first lady said.

She also criticized those who are playing politics with a coronavirus vaccine, but her remarks were delivered to a crowd of supporters where social distancing was not observed and masks were largely not worn.

“A vaccine is not a partisan issue. If you are not supporting the safe production of a vaccine, you’re not supporting the health and safety of the American people,” she said. “There is no room to play politics on this topic in the midst of [a] pandemic.”

Melania Trump talks Covid diagnosis in solo campaign event

Melania Trump made her first solo appearance of the campaign Tuesday in Pennsylvania, where she touted her “Be Best” anti-bullying campaign before charging that Joe Biden would “destroy America” as president.

The first lady opened her remarks, which came as her husband has been trying to woo back suburban women, by referring to her family’s battle with the coronavirus this month.

“We are all feeling so much better now thanks to healthy living and some of the amazing therapeutic options available in our country — thank you again for your well wishes!” she told group of about 200 mostly masked supporters in a barn in Atglen.

The rally Tuesday was the first lady’s first in more than a year. She was supposed to make a campaign appearance in Pennsylvania last week but it was postponed because of a “lingering cough” from the virus that also infected her husband and their son Barron.

Mrs. Trump offered a much softer message on the virus than the president, who has dismissed its threat at recent campaign appearances, repeatedly insisting that the U.S. is “rounding the turn” on the pandemic.

“I know there are many people who have lost loved ones or know people who have been forever impacted by this silent enemy — my family’s thoughts and prayers are with all of you through this difficult time,” she said, calling for unity in combatting the virus.

“I believe in our incredible doctors, nurses, medical professionals and scientists,” Mrs. Trump said. She also urged Americans to “remember to follow CDC guidelines so that together we can minimize the spread of the virus until a vaccine can be developed” — even though her husband has routinely flouted those guidelines with his campaign rallies and fundraisers.

Trump also praised her husband’s tweeting — but not his tweets.

“For the first time in history, the citizens of this country get to hear directly and instantly from their president every single day through social media. I don’t always agree the way he says things, but it is important to him that he speaks directly to the people he serves,” Trump said.

She also promoted her “Be Best” anti-cyberbullying initiative and the “language of love” before taking a page from her husband’s playbook and ripping Biden’s “socialist” policies, the media’s focus on “idle gossip,” and Democrats’ “sham impeachment.”

“Joe Biden’s policies and socialist agenda will only serve to destroy America and all that has been built in the past four years. We must keep Donald in the White House so he can finish what he’s started and our country can continue to flourish,” she said.

Mrs. Trump told the crowd it’s been “the greatest honor and privilege to serve as first lady of this amazing country,” and urged them “to get out and vote on Nov. 3.”

General plans campaign to deliver coronavirus vaccine quickly

The Pentagon general spearheading President Trump’s drive to ensure a coronavirus vaccine gets to the American people in record time said Tuesday that Operation Warp Speed can only work if there is full buy-in from the public when the vaccine becomes available.

Army Gen. Gustave Perna, a military logistics specialist who got a shoutout from Mr. Trump himself at last week’s presidential debate, described his mission at a session organized by the conservative Heritage Foundation was “our world’s best scientists and doctors working beside the world’s best military with the support of American industry and academia.”

“It’s the collective effort that will ensure we’re successful. I’m proud to be a part of it,” Gen. Perna said.

Operation Warp Speed is pushing ahead in the face of an at times angry political debate over the government’s handling of the virus crisis and whether the urgency of the mission will affect the safety of the process.

Thousands of volunteers will be needed after pharmaceutical giants AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson announced this week they were restarting U.S. clinical trials on their coronavirus vaccine candidates following a temporary stand-down over possible safety issues. Officials at Operation Warp Speed — a public-private partnership to develop therapeutics and ultimately a vaccine for COVID-19 — said locating a large number of volunteers for the trials is absolutely crucial.

In the past, about 5,000 to 8,000 people agreed to take part in clinical trials, Dr. Matthew Hepburn, head of program’s vaccine development, told the Heritage gathering.

“Our standard has been 30,000 volunteers for our clinical trials. We want to gather as much safety information as we possibly can,” Dr. Hepburn said Tuesday. “We want to know if [the vaccine candidates] work. The more people you enroll, the sooner you’re going to be able to evaluate the effectiveness.”

Dr. Hepburn said biotech firm Moderna has already completed its Phase 3 clinical trials with more than 30,000 volunteers enrolled in the testing. The New York-based pharmaceutical company Pfizer has signed up more than 40,000 people to take part in currently ongoing testing.

“That shows me that over 60,000 Americans have decided to say, ‘I will volunteer. I don’t know if I’m going to receive the vaccine or if I receive a placebo. But I’m going to do my part,’” Dr. Hepburn said. “We’re very proud of the spirit of volunteerism that we see in America.”

Medical researchers will be keeping in contact with those who received the initial COVID-19 vaccine candidates.

“The people that are vaccinated in the clinical trial now, our intention is to follow them for up to two years so we can get a better idea on that critically important question of duration of protection,” Dr. Hepburn said.

Past campaigns against viruses such as smallpox, polio and the measles made it possible for researchers to move more quickly to the coronavirus finish line, officials said.

Santa actors were offered early vaccine as part of scrapped federal PSA campaign: HHS

Oct. 25 (UPI) — Federal health officials in a scrapped $250 million promotional campaign offered professional Santa Claus actors early access to a vaccine for COVID-19 in exchange for participating in pro-vaccine public service announcements, the Department of Health and Human Services said Sunday.

Santa Claus actors, as well as those playing Mrs. Claus and Christmas elves, were to be hired as part of a cancelled celebrity campaign to promote getting vaccinated, an HHS official told the New York Times.

The campaign was envisioned by President Donald Trump’s then-appointee Michael Caputo, a former HHS assistant secretary, who has been on medical leave since September after being diagnosed with cancer and posting conspiracy theories on his Facebook page, including a video accusing the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention of harboring a “resistance unit” seeking to undermine Trump.

The office of HHS Secretary Alex M. Azar said this week that the program had been cancelled. The Santa “collaboration will not be happening,” a spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal.

In late August, as the coronavirus pandemic peaked across parts of the United States, Caputo and the agency approached Ric Erwin, chairman of the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas, to ask if members would participate in TV, radio, social media and podcast ads and live events in 35 cities.

The campaign was titled “Covid 19 Public Health and Reopening America Public Service Announcements and Advertising Campaign” designed to “defeat despair, inspire hope and achieve national recovery,” the Wall Street Journal reported.

The Santa group agreed to participate and asked to be given the vaccine early, as Santa actors had been vaccinated early in 2009 for H1N1.

The actors who play Santa are in an “at risk” category because of their “advanced age” and “underlying health issues,” Erwin wrote in a newsletter for Santa actors.

“Furthermore, health care officials all concurred that our high rate of interpersonal contact with young children (who are notorious vectors for disease dissemination) further highlighted our need for the vaccine,” he added.

Christmas seasonal workers are watching their livelihoods disappear as stores like Macy’s have cancelled in-person visits with Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and their elves. Some tech-savvy Santas have offered a Zoom alternative or pre-recorded video messages.

Caputo told Erwin in August that the vaccine was likely to be approved in the late fall and that Santas and other seasonal workers would have it by Thanksgiving, the Wall Street Journal reported.

“If you and your colleagues are not essential workers, I don’t know what is,” Caputo said on a call, which was recorded by Erwin. “I cannot wait to tell the president,” Caputo added. “He’s going to love this.”

Pence’s Chief of Staff, Campaign Adviser Test Positive for Coronavirus

WASHINGTON—Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff Marc Short and a campaign adviser have tested positive for Covid-19, but with just days left until Election Day, President Trump’s running mate will continue to maintain his schedule, Mr. Pence’s spokesman said in a statement.

Mr. Pence, the head of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, considers himself to be a close contact of Mr. Short, who tested positive on Saturday, according to a statement from Pence spokesman Devin O’Malley.

Marty Obst, Mr. Pence’s longtime political adviser, also recently tested positive, according to people familiar with the matter.

The vice president, who tested negative on Saturday along with his wife, has decided not to quarantine, Mr. O’Malley said. Mr. Pence consulted with White House medical staff, and will instead follow guidelines for “essential personnel.” Mr. Pence’s office declined additional comment.

According to guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the close contact of a person infected with Covid-19 should quarantine “even if you test negative” because symptoms may appear 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus.

Mr. Pence is scheduled to campaign in North Carolina on Sunday and in Minnesota on Monday.

The announcement of the positive tests comes three weeks after President Trump and multiple members of his staff tested positive for coronavirus. Mr. Trump’s infection required a three-night stay in the hospital. He returned to the campaign trail 11 days after his initial positive test.

Pfizer Sets Up Its ‘Biggest Ever’ Vaccination Distribution Campaign

In Kalamazoo, Mich., a stretch of land the size of a football field has been turned into a staging ground outfitted with 350 large freezers, ready to take delivery of millions of doses of Covid-19 vaccine before they can be shipped around the world.

has built to handle the delivery of a vaccine widely awaited as a possible relief from the coronavirus pandemic. The U.S. pharmaceutical giant says it wants to deliver up to 100 million doses this year and another 1.3 billion in 2021.

Like other drugmakers testing potential vaccines, Pfizer is urgently laying the groundwork with its logistics partners so it can move quickly if its vaccine gets the go-ahead from the Food and Drug Administration and other regulators around the world.

“It’s the biggest-ever vaccination campaign,” said Tanya Alcorn, Pfizer’s supply-chain vice president. “If we get the FDA approval, we will be able to ship the vaccines very shortly after.”

The New York-based drugmaker is working with Germany’s

BioNTech SE

on one of several experimental Covid-19 vaccines in late-stage testing. Pfizer says it may know whether its vaccine works by the end of October and that it could be ready to apply for emergency-use authorization of its Covid-19 vaccine by late November.

The company’s effort to deliver relief to pandemic-weary populations will revolve around refrigerated storage sites at two of the company’s final assembly centers—the Kalamazoo facility and another in Puurs, Belgium—and rely on dozens of cargo-jet flights and hundreds of truck trips every day. Distribution centers in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., and in Karlsruhe, Germany, have been outfitted for extra storage capacity.

Pfizer so far has spent about $2 billion on developing the vaccine and setting up the distribution network.

The U.S. government placed an initial order for 100 million doses, with the option to purchase 500 million additional doses. The EU ordered 200 million doses with an option for another 100 million. Japan ordered 120 million doses and the U.K. 30 million. Countries in South America and in the Asia-Pacific region also have placed significant orders.

In a typical vaccination campaign, pharmaceutical companies would wait until their product is approved before buying raw materials, establishing manufacturing lines and setting up supply chains to ship a vaccine.

Pfizer Chief Executive Albert Bourla said that the company began setting the groundwork for its supply chain in March, when it kicked off its vaccine development.

“Ensuring over a billion people globally have access to our potential vaccine is as critical as developing the vaccine itself,” he said.

Pfizer says it is preparing for distribution in case the vaccine wins authorization, with hundreds of thousands of doses already in the company’s warehouses in the U.S. and Europe.

Rihanna is using her latest Savage X Fenty campaign to shine a spotlight on Black breast cancer survivors.

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the singer’s lingerie brand asked three “survivors and thrivers” to model new styles from a capsule collection that will directly benefit the Clara Lionel Foundation, a charity founded by Rihanna in 2012. A press statement said that Savage X Fenty will donate a portion of the proceeds — up to $250,000 in total — to help the organization fund cancer research and support for Black people diagnosed with the disease.

The campaign photographs feature Cayatanita Leiva and Ericka Hart, both 34, and Nykia McKenzie, 26, wearing the collection’s sporty new styles against draped pink fabric. Each model had a hand in how they were presented, either taking the pictures themselves or with the help of a loved one.

Hart, who posed in a gray bralette and panty set, was diagnosed with two types of breast cancer at once: HER2-positive and triple-negative. The model credited the Black femme and queer communities with being a source of support.

“The Savage X Fenty campaign was affirming of my experience as not just a breast cancer survivor but all of my intersections of identity as a Black, queer, non-binary femme,” Hart said in an email interview.

“Many cancer campaigns focus on one aspect, your chronic illness but not how your various identities play a role in how you navigate cancer … I also loved that the campaign didn’t focus on poses that focused on strength as the sole image for living with breast cancer, but rather is just showcasing people who want to share their experience to make a difference for someone else.”

Rihanna has focused on Savage X Fenty’s inclusive appeal since launching the lingerie brand, a follow up to Fenty Beauty, in 2018. The product range caters to a variety of “nude” skin tones, and offers a wide range of sizes. Her two runway shows to date, both held at recent editions of New York Fashion Week, grabbed attention for their theatrical performances and representation of diverse body types, ethnicities and genders, in stark contrast to the kind of lingerie shows the industry is accustomed to.
