Anna Victoria’s Postpartum Journey Inspired Her to Launch New Programs On Her Fitness App

2020 has been a big year for Anna Victoria. On the personal front, after a two-year battle with infertility, the Fit Body Guides creator welcomed her first child, Aurora Vittoria Ferretti, in August.

Anna Victoria

But Victoria has been busy at work, too. She’s been developing a series of updates to her Fit Body app, including the launch of a pregnancy workout program and the introduction of three new trainers.

Victoria says being a first-time mom motivated her to bring something new to the Fit Body app that would specifically cater to her fellow mamas. “You hear about how hard being a mom is, but you really can’t comprehend it until you go through it yourself,” she tells Shape. “There are so many emotions and so many new things you have to learn — and in the midst of it all, you’re constantly feeling like you’re doing something wrong.”

In addition to emotional ups and downs, Victoria says she’s had some physical challenges during her postpartum journey as well. One week after her (unplanned) C-section in August, she says, she couldn’t even sit up on her own. “It took me two weeks to walk without pain,” she shares. “When you have a newborn, you don’t expect to be going through that. It’s a lot to juggle, which has, at times, been very hard.” (Related: 7 Moms Share What It’s Really Like to Have a C-Section)

Along with a new pregnancy-focused workout program, the trainer will also be welcoming three new trainers to the Fit Body app.

It wasn’t until she was three weeks postpartum that Victoria started feeling more like herself again, she says. “Every week since then, I’ve gotten exponentially better,” she explains.

But when she was cleared by her doctor to work out again in September at around six weeks postpartum, Victoria knew she wasn’t physically capable of diving back in just yet. “I couldn’t even think about it,” she says. “I know my body and I just wasn’t ready.”

Instead, from weeks 6-8, Victoria says she focused on breathing techniques to start feeling in tune with her body again. “I felt like building a mind-muscle connection with my core was a good place to start,” she says. (Related: Fitness Influencer Anna Victoria Fights Back Against Pregnancy Workout Shaming)

The following week, Victoria started inching her way back into a workout routine. Her first “true” workout, she says, was a beginner-level, low-impact lower-body workout from her Fit Body app. “I even ditched the weights, but I still couldn’t walk for a week [after that first workout],” she admits. “I didn’t expect to be that sore! It was so hard.”

The experience was not only humbling for Victoria, a seasoned trainer, but it also inspired her to bring more pregnancy-, postpartum-, and beginner-friendly workouts to the Fit Body app — plus a new group of trainers to teach them.

I Tried the Surprisingly Soothing Meditations on Chris Hemsworth’s Fitness App

Young sporty woman practicing yoga
Young sporty woman practicing yoga

This week, Chris Hemsworth blessed Instagram with a series of mini-meditations featuring the Aussie actor reciting affirmations in different gorgeous, scenic locations. Hilariously titled “Affirmations That Positively, Absolutely, Probably (Most Likely) Won’t Make Your 2020 Worse,” the humorous videos were actually promoting Hemsworth’s fitness app Centr, which offers real meditations.

I decided to try the meditations on Centr for myself after being sold by the soothing sound of Hemsworth’s voice in the promos. In addition to mindfulness content, Centr has six-week fitness programs, coached and self-guided workouts, and health-conscious recipes. After a free seven-day trial, there are three price options – one month for $30, three months for $60, and 12 months for $120.

With well over 50 meditations and sleep visualizations to choose from, it’s virtually impossible not to find one that piques your interest. Some are specific, like “how to heal in a relationship” or “judge less, live lighter” and others are more general, like “deep breath.” One of them is even called “stop giving a f*ck in a few minutes,” which seems like an ambitious – albeit admirable goal – for a 15-minute meditation.

There is, however, one major downside to the meditations on Centr. Unfortunately, the only sessions narrated by Hemsworth himself are for children. But, if you do happen to have any little ones at home, I highly recommend you introduce them to meditation with the dulcet tones of Thor’s voice.

Since I am fairly new to practicing, I chose to keep it simple. I tried out the “everyday mindfulness” meditation, as it incorporates one of my personal goals of being more mindful in my daily life.

Review of Chris Hemsworth's Fitness App, Centr
Review of Chris Hemsworth’s Fitness App, Centr

Over the course of about seven minutes, the meditation encourages awareness of your surroundings as you go through seemingly mundane activities like drinking your morning coffee. The narrator first talks you through grounding yourself physically by taking note of your breath, the scents and sounds around you, your feet on the ground, and your back against your chair. The narrator then explains how that level of mindfulness can be accessed outside of meditation.

“When you have a shower, or brush your teeth, practice being fully tuned in and connected to your experience,” the narrator instructs. “The feel of warm water on your skin, the smell of soap, the taste of toothpaste, the sound of water splashing.”

Overall, I appreciated how meditation made me really focus on the moments of my everyday life that I take for granted, and offered tools to be more present in those moments.

While I can’t necessarily promise that I will notice the pitter-patter of rain on my window every time there’s inclement weather, I will definitely be making an effort to be less distracted by my thoughts throughout the day.

Dating app launches for ‘healthy’ singles to bond over fitness

A new dating app designed to connect active singles with other like-minded individuals who value health, fitness and wellbeing has launched in Australia.

Named Fitafy, the app focuses on shared interests and connection rather than just looks.

Fitafy functions in a similar format to common dating apps where users swipe right for ‘yes’ and left for ‘no’.

Once both users’ swipe ‘yes’ they are notified of a match, and they can connect through messages.

Users can also filter by individual preferences, such as running, cross-fit and weights training, as well as nutrition preferences.

Founder Brendan McCormack, from Perth, developed the app after a large audience of fitness enthusiasts on social media were asking him for advice on how to meet other fit and healthy people.

To create a world-class app, Brendan and the Fitafy team secured over $500,000 in seed capital to commence development of the app.

The team partnered with respected developers Appsauce who have built apps for the likes of Kanye West and Manchester City, and 173Tech, whose co-founder Candice Ren developed and scaled the analytics function at dating apps Bumble and Badoo.

Post-development, the Fitafy app launched nationally in late October 2020 in Australia, with plans to launch globally in 2021.

‘We would never want to reduce people down to that superficial level of just a picture, age, name and location.

‘Fitafy is here to help the world embrace an active and healthy lifestyle; It’s about taking that idea of fitness out of a limited stereotype and instead to reflect the millions of people who identify with that lifestyle in a plethora of ways.’
