I’m going to be honest: Early on in quarantine, my tooth-brushing habits definitely took a beating. My usual twice-a-day brushing quickly turned into once-a-day. When you don’t have to formally get ready in the morning, it’s just so easy to skip the all-important cleaning routine — that is, unless you have a toothbrush that rewards you for using it.
Hum by Colgate’s Smart Electric Toothbrush, which is currently 30 percent off for Amazon Prime Day, is the latest cleaning gadget that’s going to make brushing, dare we say, fun? It did so for me, and it got me back to brushing twice a day—not only because I’m able to earn points, which I can eventually use to purchase things like a replacement brush head, but because the smart toothbrush gives me that fresh-from-the-dentist clean every time I use it, sans sitting in the dentist’s chair for 30-plus minutes.

When I first got my toothbrush in the mail, I was instructed to download the Hum by Colgate app on my phone and connect it via Bluetooth. Once it’s set up, there’s the option to choose guided brushing, where the app shows you the exact areas you should be brushing and for how long; you can also just brush on your own. Either way, the app will reward you (two points for the former, one for the latter) and show you how much surface area your brushing covered. I currently average 99 percent coverage on my own—but I only became such a thorough brusher because I started off with guided brushing.
To buy: $60 (was $85); amazon.com.
The Hum by Colgate smart toothbrush uses powerful sonic vibrations that can be adjusted to suit your liking: There are normal, sensitive, and deep clean settings. I usually go for the normal setting in the morning and then deep clean in the evening. There’s also a timer that makes sure you stick it out for the full two minutes. Usually $85, Amazon Prime members can scoop it up for just $60 during Prime Day. (But the deal is only good today, October 13!)
The Hum by Colgate brush was my foray into the electronic toothbrush world, and I’m certainly not disappointed. In fact, I don’t think I’ll ever go back to my boring old toothbrush ever again.
